Paul Gallagher photography Technique

"Like most people above the age of twenty five who have picked up an affinity for photography I started out with 35mm film equipment. For me this helped to develop two things; a patience for composition and knowledge of films. Photography starts by seeing the image but ends with that image on paper and its the steps in between that matter so much."

"My technique is somewhat governed by the new equipment I acquired over the last few years. Primarily I use a Pentax 67 II medium format set up with lenses starting at 45mm up to a 400mm f4 and several in between.Employing only roll film based gear, lacking modern mechanisms such as auto-focus and a motor drive I believe helps me to refine my skills as I look through the lens. Its very much a case of get the shot or miss it forever on most occasions, and this factor is captured in my work."

"I recently added a Noblex 175ux panoramic camera to my arsenal, going with a swing lens camera as opposed to a traditional panoramic format. It was the Noblex's ability to shoot such a wide angle in perfect perspective that led me to make this creative decision. While getting only four shots on a roll, without the help of an inbuilt metering system, will also help me develop further the patience required for film based medium format shooting"

"In the future I intend to push forward into the realm of large format 4" by 5" photography, which I see as true artistic shooting. What can be seen initially as a box with film at one end and glass at the other requires an infinite amount of understanding to produce a top quality image from such seemingly limited gear. However the results are indescribable when achieved, and can be seen in the work of masters like Peter Dombrovskis and Leo Meier"
